Hi all,

The short version is...

I have a .MOV file on my system and wanted to play it using a generic player
I downloaded. There was no file association for .MOV so I got the usual
"select from this list" dialogue. When browsing for the player, I went
through a shortcut I have to the folders it is in. Windows didn't follow
the shortcut, it added it to the program list you can select from when using
open or open with.

Again, this isn't for the .MOV associations. I now get this shortcut as an
item to be selected when I use the "select the program from a list" option
when opening any file that does not have an association. I'd like to get
rid of it but since this is for unassociated files I can't seem to locate
where it's stored.

Thanks for the help.

First, you want Apple Quick time to play .mov files.
Download it, and your association problem is solved.
To clear a file association:
Open Explorer/Tools/Folder Options.
Scroll to the file type.
Click Advanced/Remove.
HTH

Nope.

I tried to be specific, I guess I failed.

The key I'm looking for has nothing to do with associations. It has to do
with files that have NO association. I can click on any file that does not
have an association in Windows and when it loads up the list of programs to
select from as possibilities, this shortcut is in the list right along with
Word, Media Player, Notepad, etc.... It's not in folder options since it
does not have a file type associated with it. It's just a selectable item
in the programs list.

And Quicktime sucks.

Quicktime may suck, but if you want to play .mov files...
I think my procedure will work-you'd be removing Quicktime from the list of
registered file types.
No harm to try.

Steve,

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Applications\<filename>.lnk

The <filename>.lnk is the one that you want to delete.
