cant extend volume

sphilip

on our win2k advaned server, our hdd was running out of
space. we added a new 36.4GB hdd, our volume was initally
basic, so we upgraded it to dynamic and using our
serveraid manager i migrated this hdd to the exisitng
array. migration was succesful but no free space was added.

i went onto the disk management console and all i could
find was 14.9gb of unallocated space in this volume. we i
tried extending the new volume, i cant do it as the volume
was initially configured as basic.

how do i add this new hdd to current volume?

325590 How to Use Diskpart.exe to Extend a Data Volume
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=325590

Um, that link says this:

NOTE: You can extend only new volumes that were created on a Dynamic
disk. You cannot use Diskpart.exe to extend a volume that is currently
on a Dynamic disk but was originally created on a Basic disk. If you
try to do this, you receive the following error message:

Diskpart failed to extend the volume.
Please make sure the volume is valid for extending

You can download Diskpart for Windows 2000 at:

My bad. The disk has to be NTFS basic and also not the system partition.
You can (under certain circumstances) convert the disk back to basic using
Diskprobe. However, there is really nothing that you can do to extend a
dynamic parition that was created as basic without some risky editing with
Diskprobe.

Your bad. *heheh* it's a good thing your statement didn't come with a
warranty nor convey any rights. Converting the disk back to basic is not
recommended nor supported.

Backup to tape and restore from tape would be *an* option. Not really a fun
option, but valid nonetheless.
