Can't download software from IE6

G

Guest

I have Windows XP 2002 with Service Pack 2 and Windows Explorer V6.
I can't remember if it was just before or just after the installation of
SP2, I noticed I couldn't download any software from IE6. The first "File
Download" dialog box doesn't appear to prompt you to open or save the file.
It goes diectly to the second "File Download" dialog box. The pages are
moving from the globe to the folder but that's it. Numbers that should appear
for "Estimated time left:", Download to:", and "Transfer rate:" are not there.
Before the ballast manufacturing plant closed where I worked, the IS fellow
would save what I needed on a disc, and I would come home and download it
that way.
Thank you to anyone who responds.

Hi Cynthia :)

There are some changes you will need to make to your settings after
installing SP2. Take a look at the information below and see if it helps:

I Can't Download Anything Since Installing XP Service Pack 2
http://www.tugvalleyoutdoors.com/xp_help.htm

Error message: "Internet Explorer cannot download a file"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=816868

Internet Explorer Cannot Download a File
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q816868

Not Prompted to Specify Download Folder for File
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=177976
It is possible the only difference for Internet Explorer 6 is that you need
to
click "Advanced" instead of "Edit".

Hope this helps.

The 2nd and 3rd links required SP1 and changing the registry (scary stuff).
In the 1st link, my download prompts were enabled - no help there.
In the fourth link, it asks me to go to my registered file types. My
"software installation settings" box was checked to "confirm open after
download" - sorry, again, no help there.

Yes....changing the Registry is 'scary stuff'. :) However, there are times
when it is necessary to make some changes there. Just be sure to back up a
copy via the Export feature before you make changes just in case.

There are some security changes with SP2 that affect accessing some types of
websites, especially, secured sites. Also, depending on what 3rd party
applications you have installed, in the way of toolbars, add-ons, firewalls,
ad or popup blockers, etc., things can require a bit more troubleshooting.
As well as the type of sites you are accessing, the security settings can
play a big part. It then becomes a process of elimination. I don't know
what you have installed on your system, so I will try to provide some
insight as best I can. Try the following:

How to troubleshoot problems accessing secure Web pages with IE6 SP2
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=870700

Windows XP stops responding when you download updates from Windows Update
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831429

Also, disable all 3rd party toolbars.

Disable your firewall.

Try adding the site to your Trusted Zones.

Authenticate yourself to the site first by accessing the site before trying
to download from the site from a link. Then try the download.

You might also want to refresh your scripting engine:

What file type are you downloading?
"Software installation settings" on my XP SP2 is for .ZAP and is only
for a text file that opens with Notepad.
That is unlikely to be the software you are downloading, so I believe
you have looked at the wrong file type.

You're right Alan. They are exe files which is not on my list of registered
file types.
I can't even download updates unless they are automatic. I did notice,
however, that I thought I was able to "download" 2 updates, but when I
checked my update log, I saw that they were already previously downloaded
through the automatic process.
I disabled the windows firewall and kept McAfee's. I disabled 2 of three
pop-up blockers and kept the windows blocker. Now I will investigate further
suggestions from Jan.

OK.
If you don't have success with Jan's suggestion, try this old response
of mine:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

I tried everything and nothing worked.

Alan, the .exe is not there.

Jan, the first two links didn't reveal any abnormalities.
Unfortunately, I'm unable to refresh my scripting engine because I can't get
past the genuine windows validation. My information bar doesn't appear
(another problem or are the two tied together in some remote way?), so I'm
unable to allow the ActiveX. I used their alternate method which required me
to download GenuineCheck.exe, which I can't download. I can't download
anything.

I can't help but wonder if there is a little program or routine missing that
directs IE6 to open the first "File Download" dialog box from which you
choose to open or save the file.

Hi Cynthia :)

In view of the information below, I will make the two following suggestions
for you to try.

It is possible that you have some form of malware on your system that is
preventing you form being able to downloading anything, as it may not want
up to be able to download and install anything that you could use to remove
it. Yup, some are programmed to do just that.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions
It this resolves the problem, then run the programs below:

All MS - MVP Sites.

As you can't download anything, then go to another computer and download the
removal files in the information above to a CD or floppy and then copy them
to your hard drive and install them there.

If the problem still persists, then you will need to do a Repair of the IE:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
If you jave SP2, follow the instucttions in the SP2 section:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378#XSLTH3130121123120121120120

You're very welcome! Glad to hear you were able to resolve your problem.
Good job!

Thank you very much for posting back and letting us know what worked for
you, and for the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem.
