IE6 Currupt? in WinXP

P

Phil Banks

I noticed yesterday that I can not download files from the
internet by clicking a link in IE6. The file appears to
be downloading, but I don't get a Download Dialog Box.
After a while I'll get a blank page. If I right click on
the link, I can "Save Target As", but why doesn't the
dialog box open by just clicking the link? I tried to
reinstall IE6 SP1, but it fails with a message
like "previous install of this program has uncompleted
issue that must be completed before this instal can take
place..." Is there away to fix IE6 without reinstalling
Windows XP Home?

Phil -

Let's first deal with the Download Dialogue box issue, to make sure that is
enabled.

Access *Folder Options* (path varies depending on OS in use) > File types>
scroll down to the file type(s) desired>Edit> check the box which says
"confirm
open after download"> OK>Apply>OK out.

I know the wording to "confirm open after download" seems contrary to what
you want, but that *is* what you must do to get the Open or Save dialogue
box to appear *before* the download commences.

Lucky Strike,
It seems that all of my file types already have "confirm
open after download" enabled.

I tried the repair/reinstall IE reg edit. That didn't fix
the issue either. It appears that the next thing to try
is reinstall Windows XP Home. But that will have to wait
a while before because I have lots of files that I need to
save to CD ROM, first.

I looked for the WINXP CD, but I'm not sure Dell gave me
one. It looks like they gave me backups of everything
that was installed on the hard drive, so it must be here
somewhere.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

Then perhaps a repair / re-install of IE might be in order, as the "confirm
open..." is enabled. But before you do that, read these MSKB articles
(although it doesn't list XP as an applicable OS), and the others as an
answer may be found in one of them.

I also saw that Alan Edwards (MS MVP W95/98 Systems) had posted to someone
who had a *somewhat* similar problem. I will paste his reply below (Thanks
Alan).

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.
