Can't Delete Recorded TV Program Files

SUBJECT: Can't Delete Recorded TV Program Files

Perhaps some of you can point me in the right direction...
a) I have (21) recorded TV program files (*.dvr-ms) on my PC which were
created in Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE).

b) Windows XP MCE fully recognizes them and allows me to watch them in MCE.
I can also view them in Media Player 10 (as would be expected).

c) When I go though the normal deletion process within MCE it looks like I'm
deleting them by removing the program name from the Recorded TV listing and
changing the "# of ##" at the end of the listing.

d) HOWEVER, they are not really deleted - the files still show up in Windows
Explorer and when I close and reopen MCE they are back in the listing and the
"# of ##" is incremented back up again.

e) When I attempt to delete them with Window Explorer it gives me the
following error: "Cannot delete <fileneme>: Access is denied. Make sure disk
is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use."
....HD has 20MB free and I have Administrator rights which sorta suggests that
these files are thought to be "currently in use." None of them have the
"read-only attribute set.

f) The system DOES allow me to COPY these files; just not Cut or Delete.
BTW, it also allows me to Delete a copied version of any of these files.

g) Back in March 2004, via Windows Explorer, I had previously moved (and as
I recall had no difficulties or restrictions in doing so) the dvr-ms files
out of the default "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Recorded
TV" directory and into a subdirectory under "...\Recorded TV" called Keep
with the (21) individual dvr-ms files being spread across seven sub-folders
within "Keep" (e.g., Friends, Shania Twain, Sara Jessica Parker, Misc, etc).
This is the first time I have tried to Move or Delete them since doing that.

h) In the Registry under
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media
Center\Service\Recording" the "WatchedFolders" and "RecordPath" values are
still set to their default value "C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Documents\Recorded TV" so obviously MCE looks into all subdirectories
of whatever path is set for these two parameters because MCE fully recognizes
the presence of these 21 recorded TV shows. BTW, Windows Explorer won't let
me move the dvr-ms files back into the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Documents\Recorded TV directory either.

NOTE: I have a Gateway Pentium4 2.4GHz, 512MB RAM, with 20 GB free on a 75GB
hard drive; I have Administrator permissions and can perform all functions
with any other files. Rebooting does not correct the problem.

It appears to me that somehow the system has "locked" or "reserved" these
MCE recorded TV Show files (*.dvr-ms). How can I blow these files away and
regain over half of my hd space (40+MB)?

ANY SUGGESTIONS would be much appreciated? I posted this Question to the
Media Center Edition Discussion Group the other day and it did not result in
a solution so I'm thinking it's more of an XP system issue than a Media
Center issue even though they are files created by Windows XP Media Center
Edition.

TIA,
- tom
