Can't delete printers - please help!

Hi all

I posted this to m.p.w.print_fax the other day but haven't had any
replies... i need to ghost 30 machines and can't until i've sussed this
problem out... please help!

I'm getting the following error when trying to remove two network printers:

Are you sure you want to remove your connection to the printer "black and
white printer" on the server "printmachine" ?

[Y]

Printer connection cannot be removed. Either the pritner name was typed
incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server.
For more information click help.

I've tried stopping the print spool service, removing reg entries, removing
drivers from System32, and they're still there after a reboot. I'm logged in
as admin, but the majority of the printer properties are ghosted out.

This is the same on all the machines.

Any help much appreciated... i've tried trawling the knowledge base and
google groups both to no avail.

On the computers that are hooked up directly to the printers, can't you
delete the printer Icons in the Printer dropdown window?

We have deleted the printer on the PC where it was shared, but the printer
is still present on all the workstation computers and cannot be deleted.

Leaving it there isn't really an option as our users keep printing to the
wrong printer, queueing stuff up, then get the hump when we cant move the
print queue to another printer so all their work is lost.

This one is a head scratcher.

When the Local area Network was setup, did they use the Network Wizard, or
something else?
It sounds like you have "The Printer from Hell", that refuses to leave.
You might try to re-install the Local Area Network, using the Wizard and
then un-install it, probably on each work station.

Good Luck,
Jerry

Yep, we used the Network Wizard... we have a simple setup of around 30 peer
to peer workstations sharing an ADSL router.

I've found a workaround... there are two accounts on each machine, admin and
limited... each with their own printer settings. I can delete the printers
from admin, but not from the limited account, even if i promote the account
to administrator.

So i deleted the limited account and created another one... took a while,
but now the limited account is virgin again without any rogue printers.

All the machines, and accounts, are identical so i can create an image and
ghost it onto the others.... so i no longer have the problem, but remain
curious as to the correct way of resolving it should it ever happen again.

I think what screwed it up was that we kept changing the printer driver and
port whenever our main printer fell over, which was all the time... it must
have confused the workstations.
