Can't delete by right clicking in windows xp

I run Windows xp, servpk2, and IE7. After I down loaded "Adobe Reader
8.0" it placed an icon on my desktop which will not delete when I right

click on it with my mouse. I un installed the program but the icon is
still on my desktop and in the Start>All Programs menu, "Adobe Reader
8.0" is listed but again I can't delete it by right clicking on it.
What does happen is my hourglass pops up and then after a few seconds
my desktop and taskbar reset. It seems that if I right click on
anything in my taskbar or in the programs list, instead of getting a
menu like: open;delete;send to; etc. I get the hourglass and a reset on

my desktop and tastbar. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks, John

Try stopping the "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" service. It solved that
problem for me.

I hope that helps.

Have you tried deleting Adobe reader in the Add/Remove program in the
Control Panel?

Yes, I have removed the program, but the icon didn't go away, and the
program was listed in my Start>All Programs list with one of those
icons that look like a "Windows' window" a white box surrounded by a
blue frame. If I single left click on it nothing happens, but when I
right click I get the hourglass and a reset.

OK, try another route,

Right click Start and select Explore,
Click to expand drive C, Documents and settings, Administrator,
Application Data and Adobe.
You should see Adobe reader.
Highlite it, and click File at the top to select delete.

Jerry,
When I right clicked on Start, my hourglass popped up, my system froze
for about 15sec, then my desktop and taskbar were reset. It seems like
anything I right click on brings up my hourglass and then the reset. I
have reinstalled Windows xp,(not a clean install-not yet anyway) and
the problem stayed. I ran "SFC/scannow" and no problems came up. I have
used "Reg Cure", a registry cleaner, and it claimed it fixed a number
of problems but this one still was there. I run McAfee AV and it's not
showing any viruses. I really appreciate you taking time to look at
this. Thanks, John

Hi again, John

One last shot at deleting the Adobe Reader Icon,
Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Windows Explorer.
At the top, click Desktop.
Look for Adobe Icon on the right side, click to highlite it,
Click File at the top and delete.

Good Luck,
Jerry

Seems you have another problem on to of the deletion troubles. Check
information in item #3 and item #5 on the following page:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/context.htm

Perhaps you'll find something there that will help with the right click
troubles.

JerryM,
I fixed the problem using a program called "ShellExView". Instuctions
were posted at: http://windows.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm. It was a
problem with a "context menu handler" that came from "ShredXP" a
shredding program I had installed and hadn't used.
My many thanks for your time and effort to help me.
John
