I am trying to defrag but it keeps starting over. What can I do to stop this?
Do I need to temporarily disable my Norton antivirus and if so, how do I do
that???? Thanks

In Betty had this to say:

Depends... Is this on an XP system? XP is usually pretty good about
defragging with services and drive changes... Hmm... What's the log say?
When you cancel it you should have a chance to see a log or save a log?

Betty, it sounds like your using Windows 98, the built in defragment software
will restart anytime the drive is accessed, XP's defragmenter is much better,
although I actually use Diskeeper 10.

You could check out Diskeeper 10 at the following link :

One word of warning if you are on Windows 98, Microsoft officially stop
support for it in mid July, so you may want to upgrade to XP or wait for
Vista in January 2007.

I am trying to defrag on my computer which has XP. It will go up to about
10% and then starts over. Should I let it keep doing this and eventually it
will finish? I remember that I need to close other systems down so the
defrag can run but something seems to be running the background and I don't
know how to find out what it is. And I can't remember how to close down the
other applications because it has been so long since I did this.

My husband has windows 98 should I upgrade to XP?. I tired to scandisc on
his computer and I kept getting the message that it had to start over 10
times because something was writing to the disc. And if so how do I do this
and not lose everything? His computer is so slow now I don't know if it will
handle XP.
Thank you

In reply to upgrading your husband's computer to XP, It's well worth
considering but also remember that Windows Vista arrives in January but you
will need a descent computer to run it, an old Windows 98 computer will not
cope with Vista.

As with the Defrag issues, try Diskeeper trial as I mention before.

Just defragment in Safe mode, you dont have to worry about anything
interfering with the defrag. Run chkdsk bfore that. Also make sure you
have the requisite amount of free disk space. Its also a good idea to
run disk cleanup bfore the defrag.
As Andy mentioned, Diskeeper is a good defragger you can switch to, the
paid version has scheduling features and its faster than the built in
tool.
