XP Home Edition Defrag

When I run analyze in the defrag utility, it says to defrag. So I do. But
then I can analyze again and it says I need to defrag again. Keeps saying
this? Is something wrong with my utility? It doesnt give me any errors and
says it is completed at the end of each defrag I run. I have more than 15%
free space....65% to be exact. Baffled in Tacoma!

Are there any files listed as Most Fragmented Files? What are their
names and sizes?

15 % free space is a minimum. 20% or more is better. Disk Defragmenter
can find it difficult to defragment large files when free space is
widely fragmented. If a large page file is located on the disk or
volume and it is fragmented then this creates fragmented free space.
This will be obvious because the graphical display will show many
green bands occupied by "Unmoveable files". This is the pagefile. It
can be be difficult to resolve using Disk Defragmenter, although there
are methods to try which may or may not resolve the problem.

How large is your hard disk and how much free space?

Are you using any Norton products? A Norton Protected Recycle Bin is
included with some Norton Products and users can be unaware how and
overlook emptying it from time. Also Norton Ghost will create large
hidden folders.

Rollback RX Pro is another product that can create significant free
disk space issues.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Conclude by running Disk Defragmenter.

The routine above does not remove all unnecessary clutter from your
hard disk, especially if there is more than one user Logon.

Hope this helps.

You may like to try these:

For defragging page files:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/FileAndDisk/PageDefrag.mspx
For general defragging, Diskeeper Light:
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/...ance_and_Repair_Utilities/Diskeeper_Lite.html
Diskeeper Light, from what I understand, is made by the same people who make the defragger that comes with XP, but, it is more powerful, quicker and does a better job and is free. You may find a more recent version if you look around.

Well if you tried Diskeeper Light then it takes over completely from the
Windows defragger so it is no longer Windows defragger giving you that
message.

I was unable to find a freeware version of the program. The link
appears to take you to the newer version which is a "free download"
for a thirty day trial version.

I did download the trial version from your link and when I tried to install
it gave me an error about missing some file in the install. But I finally
resolved it myself. Yipee! I did a cleaning with my McAfee program...cleans
everywhere, even the register. After that, I ran the defrag again and
finally I saw 69% free instead of 65% free. And when it was completed, I
clicked analyze once more and it said I didnt need to defrag. Phew. Thank
you all who tried to help. I really appreciate your kindness. Dianna

Glad you solved it. If you want to try Diskeeper Light you can also get
it via Majorgeeks, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207 and
it's the correct free version not the trial version.

TacomaGirl,
What Mcafee program did you use to clean everywhere, even the registry?
