Can't Defrag or Restore

Here's what I was doing when it happened:
I was opening large DVD files in my Explorer C drive and copying them onto
my external hard drive. Toward the end, my system started to go extremely
slow. I tried a reboot and it took (literally) 40 minutes to get back. So I
tried a defrag, which started but never went anywhere. I tried a system
restore and it failed. Tried both in safe mode with same results. Deleted
all recycle bin content...nothing changed.

Any ideas?

Have you tried Restore to a previous date? Start with the latest
date in the list, and work your way back until it starts to work
again.

If that won't work or your restore points have all disappeared,
you have a little more work to do.

tried that. Even the most recent restore point does not work.
