can't defrag hard disk

After defragging hard disk with system mechanic - get
report 12% fragmented - worse than when i started defragger.
Cause "pagefile sys locked". How do i unlock?

Hi Marea,

Not all Disk Defragmenter products (including XP's Defragmenter) can defrag
the paging file. You might try changing Virtual Memory settings to "No
paging file" (right-click on My Computer, select Properties>Advanced
tab>Settings button under Performance>Advanced tab>Change button under
Virtual memory>radio button beside No paging file>Set button). You should
take note of what your settings currently are before changing to "No paging
file" so that you can re-enter the previous settings after running Defrag
and restarting.
Once you have selected No paging file and then Set button, use My Computer
or Windows Explorer to navigate to C:\ and change the folder options to Show
hidden files and folders and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files
(Recommended)". Locate pagefile.sys and delete it. Restart your computer and
run Defrag.

It may depend on the version of System Mechanic the OP has but this is
the manufacturer's claim for the current version:

New boot-time defragmentation utility
System Mechanic's boot-time defragmentation utility can be scheduled to
run system and file defragmentation before Windows loads, eliminating
slow-downs that can occur if it were running after Windows is loaded.
This is excellent for workstations and servers that cannot or should not
perform defragmentation when Windows is running. Boot-time
defragmentation can also process crucial system files that cannot be
defragmented when Windows is running, such as the system page file,
registry hives, and MFT.
