Trying to create a partion on a 320GB external drive.
Followed instructions up to "Right-click an unallocated region of a
basic disk, and then click New Partition" However, this option does not
appear.
(See attached jpeg).
I should have full administrator rights, so don't think that's the
problem.
Must be doing something wrong.

Help please.

Thanks in advance.

I don't understand your question. What exactly are you asking?
What are you trying to do?

Your external hard drive, WD USB 2 (J:), already has a single
partition that's formatted NTFS. There is no unallocated space.

Note: A hard drive the manufacturer labels 320 GB is seen by
Windows as being 298.02 GB in size. The manufacturer uses the
decimal notation of 320 billion bytes. Windows translates that
to binary which results in the smaller number which is the true
size of your external hard drive.

Nepatsfan.

What I was hoping to achieve was to create a second partition,
splitting the drive in two 160GB halves (roughly).
I've just read an article that says XP doesn't provide a way to resize
partitions, and recommends the use of third party software e.g.
Partition Magic, which I do have, but vowed never to use again
following problems defragmenting.

Any further insight?

From the screen shot you took of Disk Management it would
appear that your external hard drive is empty. Why not simply
delete the single partition and create two new partitions of
149 GB each?

If you have some data on this drive that you can't move and/or
you don't want to lose then your only alternative is to use a
third party utility to resize your original partition. If
you're unwilling to use PM, you're going to have to find a
similar program. Here's one that's often recommended on these
newsgroups:

BootIt NG
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootitng.html

You can download a fully functioning 30 day evaluation copy. If
you decide to try this program I suggest you spend some time on
their support site and familiarize yourself with the programs
operation before you attempt to use it on your external drive.
I haven't used it in quite some time (I'm a satisfied Partition
Magic user) but I do remember it having a steeper learning
curve than PM.

Good luck

Thanks for all the usefull advice.
I've managed to create two seperate partitions, it seems so simple now,
didn't realize I had to delete the original partition first (it was
previously reformatted, so no data to worry about), and the Wizard worked
a treat.
I'll investigate partitioning software for possible future use.

Thanks

You're welcome. Thanks for letting us know you were able to get
your drive partitioned that way you want.
