Can't Create Desktop Shortcuts

F

All of a sudden I can no longer create desktop shortcuts...

If I right click on the desktop, click on "new" then "shortcut" nothing
happens...

Any thoughts, hints or ideas?...

Thanks in advance...

Hi FS--

1) Try running SFC from an elevated command prompt>type sfc /scannow.
2) If #1 doesn't work, try a system restore point to before this happened if
you have one.

I may be missing what you're trying to do, but a workaround would be to
drag and drop, or copy the shortcut from the file, folder, or url you want
to the desktop or to the locations where you want it to reside.

Have you tried it the other way around?

Highlight the program or data file in Explorer, right-click, Send To,
Desktop (create shortcut)

You can then rename the new icon link on the desktop, change its icon,
etc.

Chads hint didn't turn up anything...

Brinks tip seemed to "merge" but still doesn't work...

hmmm...

but I was able to use Mazorj's tip...

So I guess I'll just use a work around until my next "clean" install...its
more of a "slight" inconvenience if anything...I am planning to upgrade my
hard drive...so I'll check it then...

but thanks again to all who contributed...

Glad to be of help.

I started with the CP/M OS in 1983, went through DOS and Windows, and
I think that Vista is the quirkiest one I've encountered. Features
and functions mysteriously disappear or stop functioning.
Configurations mysteriously revert to earlier settings or to settings
that you had never set. Pop-ups advise you that a device or service
mysteriously has become no longer available. Usually the problem is
minor or disappears on reboot; but sometimes a work-around like my
suggestion is as good as it gets. Just be happy that there is a
work-around because that's not always the case when Vista decides to
get quirky on you.
