The problem is when connecting a Dlink DSL-302G via either the usb or
ethernet cables, xp home does not obtain an ip address. When manually
configuring an ip address and giving appropriate gateway settings etc, xp is
unable to ping the dlink. I can ping 127.0.0.1 and the configured local
address successfully. I have tried the dlink on a laptop and it's working
fine. I added another network card to the computer, it displayed the same
behaviour. I've performed virus scans and spyware scans, the system came up
pretty clean, in keeping with the owners statment that it doesn't get used
on the internet much because dial up is too slow. I've tired various winsock
repairs - netsh int ip reset, winsockxpfix etc. The internet works fine over
dial up, so it seems to be related to the networking components.
The computer in question doesn't have service pack 2, I don't see the point
until I get it working first. Any suggestions as to what to try next? A
repair install is top of my list.
