Can't connect wireless

I have a laptop that I just got and the wireless nic is
working properly, but for some reason it can't locate the
wireless connection. I am broadcasting the connection and
have it set with no security settings. When I turned on
the computer for the first time the wireless connection
was there and then it disappeared never to return. Can
anyone help me see if the wireless card is on?

have you checked that the switch on the laptop is
switched on for wireless?

If so is the light on?
