can't connect to VPN externally

I have set up a VPN according to info gained in various newsgroups and
posts. Our server is SBS 2000 we are not running ISA and we have a 1 NIC
setup. A NAT Router is setup between the internet and the server. I had
our isp open TCP port 1723 and GRE protocol on the router. The problem is
no one from the outside can get a response when trying to initate a
connection. Even our isp can't get in, it always errors out with error 721.
Now from within our network I can successfully initiate a VPN conection. I
have set the server to use PPTP instead of automatic connection. I'm not
sure if this is a problem with my setup on the server or the router. Any
help would be appreciated, also I've enabled the logging for the PPTP and
nothing shows up when someone trys from the outside.

It seems like external client are not able to reach your VPN server from
outside. This seems to be more of routing problem rather than VPN problem.

You can use network monitor on your VPN server/ NAT router to sniff for PPP
packets to see if problem lies on your machine or NAT router. If none of the
machines even recieves PPP packets then your ISP may not be routing the
packets for your address properly.

There is tool called "Network Monitor" which comes with Windows 2000/windows
2003. (You can get it from Add/Remove Programs).
Look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;148942
