Need Help with VPN in Workgroup

Hi,

Our Windows NT server recently died and was replaced with a Win XP Media
Center computer for the server--basically for data and printer sharing in a
workgroup. The computers share a DSL connection through a router connected
to the switch. Previously with the NT server, two staff connected to the
server via VPN and then connected to their workgroup computers using
pcAnywhere.

I have tried to setup a VPN into the Win XP Media Center computer, but get
an error 721 no response from answering computer. I have setup the port
forward for PPTP 1723 on the router to forward to the IP address of the Win
XP Media Center computer, setup the Incoming Connection on the XP Media
Center computer and opened the port in the firewall. I've also setup the
user accounts on the Media Center computer with login and password to match
the VPN login and passwords, but the incoming connection is not answered.

So, the dilemma is what am I missing to get a workgroup computer to answer?
Do I need two NIC cards on the Media Center, or can incoming connections be
done with just one NIC since the DSL is through the router? If the staff
only needs to connect to their own workstation, should the VPN just be
forwarded to their workstation computer IP address?

Any recommendations or steps in setting this up will be appreciated!

Make sure that you connect from a LAN computer first to test that the server
is setup properly, then try from outside the network. Check your router
manual to make sure that you are setup properly to pass vpn connections
through. Remember XP will only accept one connection at a time. You might
want to look into getting a vpn end point router if you want to allow many
connections to clients inside your network. Good luck.
