Can't connect to the internet anymore

Q

Quagga.R.T.M

I bought a router and USB wireless adapter and installed them as per
instructions.

My main computer with the router receives the internet ok.

My other computer has 2 icons in the task bar.

1 from the adapter manufacturer stating the signal strength (which is 78%)
And 1 that just appeared. A network connection icon, that says I am
connected and the connection is "excellent". If I click on this icon it
brings up a screen telling me how long I've been connected.

So, to the problem.

Both these icons state that I am connected, but whenever I open internet
explorer it hangs and then says "cannot find connection". Plus any other
programmes that I use that connect to the internet also say the same.

So, I AM connected ..... but I can't connect??????????

HELP

I have actually used the internet on this computer since I installed the
wireless network. So I know it works. As and when I connected to the
internet for the first time on this computer, I received messages from
various programmes (including windows), that updates were available and did
I want to install them.

So I updated each of these programmes, leaving windows until last. If I ever
needed to restart the computer, I did. And each programme update did not
affect my connection.

Anyway, the windows updates took ages as I have never updated my standard XP
os on the computer, as it hadn't been connected to the internet before.
So I installed these many updates including the service packs and re started
my computer.
This is where it all went wrong.

As stated previously, icons in the taskbar are telling me that I am
connected (via my wireless network), but now NO programmes (inc IE), can
connect.

What to do?

I am sending this message from my original computer, which has all of it's
updates, is the computer that receives the internet connection directly and
still works / connects just fine.

The computer in trouble wouldn't happen to have Norton Antivirus and AOL
installed would it? If yes, see the following article:

Solution is to update Norton A/V.

Connected to the network but can't surf the internet suggests DNS problems.
Have you turned off the router for a few minutes, then on and tried again?

Hi Quagga,

I take it you have 1 or 2 pc's with wireless adapters, recently purchased, and that these pc's are not yet fully connected.
First, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions very carefully. You may well have overlooked some things.

I suspect the message you are seeing is the initial message is only that some wireless signals are being sensed by the adapter hardware.....but the signals are from other nearby wireless routers, but not from yours. (eg, it could be from neighbors).
That's why I urge you to follow instructions from manufacturer. There are a few steps at the end to select the correct router (yours) and to input the security bits.

Another issue is to recheck your internet connection settings in your browser (your I.E. browser). If you switched from dialup to broadband that is certainly one issue.

If no joy, you need to post back with manufacturer & models of router & wireless devices.
