Can't connect to Microsoft.com Via LAN internet connection

S

Shane Nation

I have two computers, Computer A and Computer B.

Computer A is running Windows XP SP2, with a direct connection to the
internet (Broadband)

Computer B is running Windows XP and has and is connected to Computer A via
a cable.

I have run the home net working wizard on both computers, and they can share
printing, files just fine.

Computer B can connect to the internet fine and here is the problem - it can
get to every web site apart from Microsoft.com and log into Messenger 6.2.

The Microsoft web site says it has found the site and then after about a
minute you get the can not connect to the website unavailable page.

Messenger tells you it cannot connect after about the same time and says it
may be a server problem of your internet connection at fault. It will load
up MSN.com but fail if you click on the hotmail link. The MSN passport is
set up on computer B

Computer A can connect to Microsoft.com and Messenger just fine?

I have set up in the network properties on computer B, the default gateway
as Computer A's IP 192.168.0.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0.

I have also set my ISP's DNS server IP and secondary DNS servers IP on
computer B.

Risky I know, but I have turned off all firewalls, temporary, just to check
it wasn't that. I only have the windows firewall on computer A at the
moment, I am holding off installing NIS 2005 until I have this sorted.

Please can anyone advise as I am running out of ideas now?

Shane,

Check your MTU setting on Computer B.

Chuck

Many thanks
for that.

Tried this ping command on computer B, pinging computer A

ping computer_name or IP_address -f -l 1472

Got down to 548 before it worked OK.

Did this on computer A:

..Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).

Locate the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\tcpip\parameters

On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry
value:

Value Name: EnablePMTUBHDetect

Data Type: REG_DWORD

Value: 1

Now should I do the following on computer B or would this already fixed the
problem?

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Network and Internet Connections, and then click to open the
Network Connections folder.

3. If more than one network connection is listed, for each connection,
double-click the connection and then click the Support tab of the Status
interface that opens. The connection that shows a Default Gateway entry is
probably the network connection that is used to connect to the Internet.
Note the name of the connection (for example, "Local Area Connection 2").

4. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).

5. Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE tree, go to the following key:

SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\

6. Under that key are one or more keys that have numeric identifiers. Each
of these keys has a Connection subkey. Examine each of the keys that look
like this:

ID_for_Adapter\Connection

The Name value in the Connection subkey provides the network connection name
that is used in the Network Connections folder. When you find the one that
matches the name that you found in step 3, make a note of the ID_for_Adapter
that the network connection name is under.

7. Return to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and then locate the following key

SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\ID_for_Adapter

where ID_for_Adapter is the number that you noted in step 6. When you
highlight this key, several values appear on the right side of the screen,
including DefaultGateway and EnableDHCP.

8. Right-click the right side of the screen, click New, and then click DWORD
Value. Name the value MTU.

9. Double-click the value so that you can edit the value, change Base to
Decimal, and then enter the largest acceptable MTU size, which is the size
that you identified by using the Ping tests.

10. Quit Registry Editor.

Thanks Shane
