The Garretts

Hi there PLEASE HELP me! I don't know where to turn.
I have a new laptop, HP, 1 Gb RAM, running WinXP Home. Loaded Office, &
other software, then logged on to get updates, which I installed, and now I
cannot connect to Internet. (I'm currently working on my old, tired, desktop
model.)

Have tried previous restore point (but no change), I re-installed WinXP (no
change). It seems as if the door has been closed! Is that what a security
patch does?

I have a home ethernet network, which works on the old laptop.

Can you help?

Many thanks
Jenny

If you have installed SP2, try this: Start > Run and type in

cmd

there type

netsh winsock reset

and restart Windows.

Thank you for your response Jose, BUT it didn't work for me. Yes, I do have
SP2 installed. Do you have any other suggestions?
Jenny

If you have installed SP2, try this: Start > Run and type in

cmd

there type

netsh winsock reset

and restart Windows.

How does the home ethernet network connect to the internet?
It seems likely that you have not setup the new machine correctly which can
and does happen all the time.
Firstly, can you ping the old machine from the new machine/
Can the new machine ping itself?
I also recommend that you post this message to
microsoft.public.windowsxxp.network_web. You will find lots of help there.
When you, include the results from ipconfig/all.
