I play online games a lot, and the only way for me to host a game is to
bypass my router and connect to the cable modem directly. However, Windows
cannont find access to the internet. I have tried adding new connections and
stuff, but still no. Is there a special way to connect?

There is no special way to connect. Do you normally have your computer
set to get an IP address automatically (the usual way with a router) or
have you assigned it a static internal IP address? If you have assigned
it a static IP address (i.e., 192.168.1.110) then that is why it can't
get a new external IP address from the modem.

Otherwise, try going to Start>Run and typing (without quotes)
"cmd" [Enter]. Then type

ipconfig /release [Enter]
ipconfig /renew [Enter]

What about a firewall on your computer? It shouldn't make a difference,
but have you tried shutting it down?

use port forwarding from the router to your computer?

Just to elaborate on Adam's good advice, you can also make a DMZ for
your computer on the router if you want to host games. Then you don't
have to fiddle with connecting/disconnecting, etc. Of course, that
leaves the computer exposed, so you have to decide whether you want to
risk this.

Well, i tried the port opening and forwarding, but that doesnt seem to work.
I have an SMC Barricad router and the controls are kinda confusing. I also
messed it up and dont want to mess with it.

Whats a DMZ?

I also have an automatic ip that usual with a router. do i need to do the
command prompt thing?

Thanks for all you guys' help.

Hi, I am having a problem connecting to the internet with my computer. Just
recently downloaded sp2 and all the problems started happening. Cable guy
came out yesterday and spent almost 2 hours trying to help. All of his
diagnostic equipment cleared the cable moden or cable access as the problem.
My computer shows connected at 100mbs however is dropping over 50% of all
packets, it's no wonder that webpages won't load. I tried to rebuild the
winsocket as suggested on another post and the cable guy tried to ipconfig
with no success. The error message I get is "winsocket reset catalog command
does not exist" any suggestions would be appreciated as this is very
frustrating.
