has this system EVER worked when connected to your cable modem?

Yes, it worked until the recent problem. I'd like to figure out what
the problem is. If it's in the hardware, maybe there's a workaround.
The USB ports work. But I can't get a USB connection the the cable
modem either.

Ok, we've tried just about all the usual things I can think of.

At this point if it were me, I'd go to the local store and buy a new network
card and try that. They can be had for $20 or so.

I did already try a NIC card, but it was an old one, and I"m not sure
if the drivers were right. It seems I should be able to connect to the
modem via the USB port. I can't seem to get that to work either. I'll
try again in another few hours.

One other thing you could try just for the heck of it...

Go to the computer that works, Bring up a Command Prompt box, and run
ipconfig /all

Write all the values for all the entries down, such as...

IP Address
subnet mask
gateway
DNS server addresses
etc...

Go to the system that does NOT connect, bring up network properties, set the
entry for IP Address to 'Use this Address'
enter in the information you wrote down from the system that DOES connect on
all the various tabs.

Basically what you would be doing is bypassing the use of the DHCP server
which 'should' get all it's values automatically by entering everthing
manually.

It's a long shot.

Well, I'll certanily try that. As soon as I'm done with some other
tasks, I'll try. But in the meantime, I'm getting files off the
non-connecting machine by writing to DVDs and then reading them on the
connecting computer. That's working, but isn't there some way to
connect two computers via a USB cable between the two?

It didn't work. The addresses I put in do show up when I do an ipconfig
/all, but under the status of network connections, I still get zero
received.

I'm going to try to connect the two computers via one of the USB
methods. Then I can send or post diagnostic information. I'm also going
to try again to connect to the modem via the USP port. I did try
already, but maybe I didnt have the right driver.

Do you know of any web-based forums that would be on this subject? And
do you have any idea of what my next step should be?

There really should be a logical explanation for this.
