Can't complete defrag

B

Files that cannot be defragmented
116,845 fragments, 12.82gb size, File name \Program Files\Common
Files\System Information\~GLH0008.TMP.
Ran Check Disk and Windows replaced bad clusters in File 20446 of file name
Progra~1\Common~1\aol\System~1\GLH0008.TMP
Rebooted and tried to defrag again with no suggest-same message.
This is a major portion of files that can't be defragged. What can I try?

You didn't say what defragger you are running (I assume the Windows
defragger) but you can download a 30-day version of one of the third-party
defraggers like Diskeeper or PerfectDisk and see if that does better. Once
resolved you can go back to whatever you are using now.

You could try going into safe mode and then at the cmd prompt type this:

defrag c: -f

Before going into safe mode, why not try this:

start, run, now type cmd

you will be in command prompt. Now type defrag c: -f

Wait until it is finished. You won't see any movement for 20 to 25
minutes because everything is done in the background.

Once that is finished, type defrag c: -b (this command is not
documented in MS help)

Did a search on the file path " \Program Files\Common Files\System
Information\" and other than your post hit two separate reports on a
failed installation of MDAC. You have a temporary file of more than
dubious value and I suggest you try to remove it in Safe Mode. The
problem may be that it is so large but that is what I would do.

I am assuming the drive is formatted as NTFS and not FAT32. The file
size is too large for a FAT32 drive.

I would be interested in seeing the Disk Defragmenter report. Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

Hope this helps.
