Can't click desktop icons

E

Eleanor

For some reason, since yesterday, I haven't been able to click on any of my
desktop icons. I also can't right click on my desktop or anything. I can
right click on websites and things, but for some reason I can't do it on my
desktop.

I'm running on (a pretty new) laptop. From the little touchpad icon at the
bottom of the screen, I can see that the right click button goes on when I do
it, but there is no response. I'm running on Microsoft Vista Home Premium.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Eleanor,

Hit ctrl+shift+escape to open Task Manager. On the processes tab, locate
explorer.exe and select it, then click 'end process'. This should clear the
desktop save the background. Now move to the applications tab and click on
'new task'. Type in explorer.exe and click ok to reload the desktop. Try
clicking on some icons, does it work now? If so, then you have something
loading at boot that is interfering with the desktop.

It can be fun to make a screenshot of a desktop with a couple of icons on
it, and make that the wallpaper. You can fool even experienced users for a
bit.

Oh, and it's funnier if you name the folder something like My Golden Shower
Midget Ladyboy Porn.

Go back to the restore point before you installed Windows Defender. Do the
issues go away?

FWIW, Defender is obsolete. You might want to uninstall it and use Security
Esentials (free) instead.

You sure you are having the *same* problem?

How about you describe your system (operating system, edition, service pack
level, architecture, processor, amount of memory, amount of free disk space,
etc) and issues (the symptoms you see and what you have tried) and then let
someone help you?

You have tacked onto a conversation that ended two years ago (between the
original posters) and I doubt they are monitoring said conversation now.
Best if you give your details and ask for help - after all - you may be
running a different OS, different architecture, different service pack level
and your problem therefore may not be exactly the same.

Having the same problem ...the Desktop dies not on bootup, but after opening and then closing Internet Explorer. Tried restoring back a few days , but this did not solve the problem.
