can't remove desktop icon in vista

Hello.

Since a while I have a dell inspiron 640m laptop running vista
premium.
Now I suddenly have a 'menu start' icon on my desktop and I can't
remove it. The command 'remove' is not available in the context menu
when I right-click the icon. Also, when I go to
start>settings>configuration>
personal settings where the task 'modify desktop icons' is located,
this
doesn't allow me to get rid of the unwanted 'menu start' icon on my
desktop.
Does anyone know how I can fix this, so I can finally get rid of that
'menu start' icon on my desktop?
Oh, btw, I have a Dutch version of Vista, so perhaps the icon is
called 'startmenu' or something like that in the English version.

Kind regards and thanks in advance for any suggestions, Niek

Somehow the icon has spontaneously disappeared again.
I suspect that the issue might have something to do with a
'desktop.ini' icon on my desktop that I moved to a different location.
It was visible on my desktop because I enabled the display of hidden
and system files.
