Can't change printer securities in XP Home

Hi, I have tried to connect a laptop computer to a local printer that is
connected to another computer on my home network, with no luck. After doing
some investigating, I learned that I may need to change the access
permissions on that printer so that it can be shared on the network. In
folder options, there is no box "use simple file sharing," that I can
uncheck. So I entered safe mode under the administrator, so as to access the
securities tab in the printer's preferences, but of course, the print spooler
cannot run in safe mode. Is there any other way that I can access the
security preferences of the printer?

Just for the record. What versions are you now showing? Mine indicates

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1904.0
Definition Version: 1.14.1940.2

Does that check out with you?

Let me first point out that these groups are for the support of Windows
Defender--a product which is offered to every Windows XP SP2 customer, but
which isn't a part of the OS--they aren't for general networking inquiries,
I'm afraid.

However, that said, here are a couple of references that should be helpful:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/honeycutt_july2.mspx

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814005

I share a printer connected to my wife's XP home machine, at home, so I can
tell you that this works, without modifying the settings you are looking
into. Key factors:

1) make sure all machines are running TCP/IP as the (ideally sole) network
protocol.

If those articles haven't helped--can you give a concrete example of what
you've tried, and what result you had--with details?

If browsing is not working, try doing start run \\ipaddress <enter> for
example.
