Can't capture from GS200

Running Windows XP (SP1) on a Dell Latitude C640 with Mobility Radeon 7500.

Windows Movie Maker recognizes the device (Panasonic GS200) - I select
"Best quality
for playback on my computer" (WMV: variable bit rate, 320 x 240 pixels, 30
fps)
"Capture the entire tape automatically" and "Show preview during capture"
The wizard then rewinds the tape - this works fine - but as soon as
"Capturing video"
starts", I get "An unknown error has occurred".

I've tried this with unchecking "Show preview during capture", and that
doesn't help. I've
tried changing the device format, and that doesn't work.

The odd thing is that two days ago, this worked using a much more
sohpistciated camera
(the Sony PD170). Worked fine, first time out. But then it didn't work with
the Sony
DCR-VX1000 and it doesn't work with the Panasonic GS200. I know it's
SUPPOSED to
work with those cameras - the manuals say so - but clearly there's something
I'm doing
wrong here.

I bought a new Firewire PCMCIA card and a new Firewire cable. Didn't help.

So I downloaded Adobe Premiere (60 day trial) to see if that would help. I
go into
File/Capture/Movie Capture and no matter what Capture Format I choose in
"Project
settings" - QuickTime capture, DV/IEEE 1394 capture, or Video for Windows
capture -
the Project Settings window says "Unable to connect to capture driver".

I open the Movie Capture window anyway, and its controls will run the
camera - play,
pause, reverse, etc., - but no image appears in the window, and it will not
capture
anything.

Next I tried running WinDV. It ran the camera (although I didn't see an
image in WinDV's
window) and it saved a test .avi file. When I tried to run the file,
Windows Media Player
opened up and I got an error message saying "The specified module could not
be found."

So I tried running DVIO. I try to save and get a Windows message saying
"DVIO MFC has
encountered a problem and needs to close."

Bottom line: I know my system is capable of capturing - it did a 60 minute
tape two
days ago with the Sony PD170. But it wouldn't capture from my old VX1000 or
my new
GS200, and it sure as hell is supposed to.

Does anyone have a clue what's going wrong here? I'd really appreciate it.
I'm leaving on
a trip in two days and really want to have this working for it.

Thanks in advance,

Terry

Try saving as DV-AVI from camcorder to PC, you can convert it to WMV once
you have it.

Perhaps something you installed in the last two days is causing problems.

Hi there

I had a similar problem with my Panasonic GS120. After a bit of trouble
shooting I updated the driver for the Firewire cardbus I got to go with my
notebook and everything fell into place.

did exactly as you have done with my Panasonic Dv cam and now my capture
program hangs and won't shut down. Why can't these damn techno companies get
it together and make something work for a change.
jsr.
