Can't capture

I have connected my Panasonic NV-GS200 with a DV cable to my computer with XP
SP2. MM recognizes the panasonic and even rewinds the tape when I want to
capture the complete tape. When I start capturing, nothing happens however.
After some time a message "unknown error" or "cannot connect to device"
appears.
What can be wrong?
I've also tried to use DV Studio but this software cannot connect to the
Panasonic at all.

Hello,

I've tried both the battery and A/C power but there's no difference.

If the tape rewinds there is clearly sufficient power even if for a
limited time. I would not worry too much about that.

When you plug the camera into the firewire do you get the musical note
played by the computer followed by a dialog box asking you what you want to
do? If the answer is NO then either the firewire card is in some way
defective/or not communicating properly, or there is a defect in the
firewire cable (Has it been bent at all, are there any kinks in it?) or the
terminal on the camera is not working correctly (terminal includes the
socket)

I realise this next bit is almost certainly a stupid question, but, is
the camera in VCR or Playback mode and if the option exists is their a
DV-Out setting correctly set?

Hi John,

Yes, there is the beep and the dialog box. Also MM finds the Panasonic DV.
Firewire connection must be OK.
The DV-out settings on the camera are set correctly and (of course) the
camera is in playback mode. For an unidentified reason suddenly I can get all
the way to select "capture the complete tape". However, after clicking Next I
get a message "there is no tape in your DV device". For sure there is a tape
in the Panasonic and for sure it's full of great video...........but I still
cannot capture it.
This is getting mysterious and after struggling for several days now, it's
slowly killing my happy X-mas mood.

Hello Dutch,

I think you need to get out your screwdriver :)

1) With the power turned off remove the Firewire Card
2) Reboot the computer twice (Ensures XP forgets the card)
3) Replace Card, restore Power and wait several minutes before touching
keyboard then follow any on-screen prompt to complete.

Try the camera again ....does it work ???

If Not click on MY COMPUTER MANAGE > System Tools > Device Manager and
look for any Exclamation marks or red crosses indicating a fault or a
disable state.

If you find nothing there then try and find out what chipset the
firewire card is using...if its TI then there is a chance that it IS the
card that needs replacing. TI chipsets are said to not work well with XP (I
have no personal experience of that)

Assuming that you find nothing and still have the problem.......

Do you know someone who has a DV camera that you can plug into your
computer, or Do you know someone who will let you plug your camera into
their computer.

If you plug someone's else camera into your system, and it works then
the source of the problem is obviously your camera (I would be surprised
though as there is very little that can go wrong), and if your camera works
on some other machine then start suspecting your cable and or card (again)
Don't buy a new cable until you are certain that it is the cause of your
trouble. If the cable has any kinks in it then there is a good chance the
cable IS to blame.

You can also try a program called WinDV which you can get from
http://windv.mourek.cz/ BUT, if Movie Maker is not communicating then their
is every chance that WinDV will nod. This because they are using the same
interface. If WinDV does communicate then there is a good chance that Movie
Maker is not installed properly.

If none of the above works I can do you a very good deal on 10lb lump
hammers...I have the short handle type for the fast and vicious attack and
some long handled slow and with feeling attack :)

Good Luck
