Can't browse, can't ping, can't tracert?

Hi all,

I have an XP Home machine that gives me a dns
error whenever I try to use IE6. I have tried two
different ways to connect to the Internet: one
through my local lan and two through a dialup
connection. Both give the same errors. I have
other machines on my lan that access the Internet
just fine. The only difference in IPCONFIG/ALL
is that the node type is UNKNOWN instead of
BROADCAST, compared to a Win2000Pro
machine that works correctly. I can't even ping
the local router 192.168.0.1 gives request
timed out. I know the cable is good since it
works in other machines. (driver problem?)
The automatic dhcp is set
correctly and when connected to my lan the ip
address is setting correctly but when I try to
ping yahoo.com for instance, I get a request
timed out error. This happens with either the
dialup connection of the lan connection. I think
that the dhcp client is corrupted but I don't
know how to replace it. Any ideas? Oh, it is
SP1.

thanks,
charles.....

After I type in "ipconfig/flushdns" I get:
Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache
then I fire up IE and it tries to go to 64.233.179.99 google.com for a while
and then I get another dns error.

anything else?

Hi,

It sounds like there could be a corrupt driver issue, try to uninstall it
from device manager, then reboot & let it re-install to see if it resolves
the dns problem

Also the fact that it says unknown, instead of Broadcast, seems like it
isn't going through the regular network channels..

Are you able to release & renew your IP?

Regards,

JC

One step closer to the edge...

I can release and renew and it works.
tried pinging yahoo.com after that and I get the Request timed out error. I
get the same error when I try to ping my local Linksys box 192.168.1.1. I
will try to reload the drive and see if that helps. If that doesn't the only
thing left that I can think of is a wipe and full reinstall.

thanks,
charles....

Are you certain that your setup is allowing ICMP packets to pass from one
computer to the other? Ping uses these packets.

Thanks to both PCfixinman and Jim. Rather than go through a long drawn out
diag procedure to do what I call a "surgical intervention" and figure all
what exactly happened, I just backed up the data and did a reinstall from
scratch. With the new config the computer JUMPED on the internet as soon as
I hit the IE icon (DSL3GBs) so it works just fine now. I have learned that
rather than find out exactly what the problem was and exactly how to fix it
(may take hours or days) it is just
quicker and more effective to reload from scratch. The other advantage is
that I know exactly what is on the computer. My working theory is that some
subsystem that has to do with the networking connection was corrupted or
affected by some invasionware since both the ethernet and dialup connections
were affected. Since it works now I don't really care. Oh, btw it wasn't
due to any upgrades since the XPH was on SP1 and hadn't been updated but
probably once in its' life.

thanks again,
charles....
