Can't boot XP pro

Having trouble getting XP to boot. Boot process stops with wallpaper
but no icons or taskbar. Not frozen; mouse will move around and task
manager will come up and let me restart with a cntrl-alt-delete, but
boot always stops at the same spot.
Ideas?

BTW, safe mode stops in the same basic place, although black screen
rather than wallpaper.

Sounds like you may have a corrupted/damaged user profile, either
the one you're using to login, or the Default Users. Try logging in
with a different account. If you get the same results, try replacing
the Default Users profile with a known good copy from a
similarly-configured machine, or from backup.
