I have had windowsXP installed about a year now, without any major problems,
until yesterday. When my son booted the computer, it displayed the subject
message. It also said to repair start windows setup with original CD used to
install XP and to select 'r' at the first screen to repair. So itried this
and got the same message, so i tried booting up with DOS, which didn't help
because the setup proram will not run in DOS.
So now what to do? The fix for the problem requires windows but I can't
boot windows. Seems like a catch22. Any help would greatly appreciated, I
realy don't want to have remove XP and reinstall it. Please help !!

u can boot from the installation disc ;
enter the recovery console;
login to your depending installation (otherwise just press 1 and enter);
type in your administrativ password (it´s the systembuilder one...);
type at the prompt "sfc /scannnow".... (sfc--systemFileCheck)
it will replace the changed systemfiles or restore these.
Note: if u ve updated xp the files which are restored are based on an older
date...
not every file should be restored, ´cause it is possible that the
latest dll´s are
recommended for properly function....

otherwise copy the file manually in the conmsole:

copy x:\i386\"missing file" y:\ <enter>
x-->optical drive
y-->destination folder

Is your computer reporting an error with the harddrive before it even tries
to load windows(does a screen come up asking you to press f1, or perhaps
warn of an SMART hard disk failure?)
Can you start the system in safe mode? Press F8 while the system is
restarting, getting in with safe mode might let you scan your hard drive for
errors.
