When I am trying to start my computer, it takes me to the safe mode prompt
and gets to windows xp start up screen and then automatically tries to
reboot. It goes through the process so quickly that the only thing I can
read is "unmountable boot record".

Put in your XP cd and when it asks if you wish read the CD push the space
bar. When a blue sceen comes up asking you if you wish to install or do a
recovery hit r which will bring up the recovery console. When a prompt
comes up type fixboot which will then fix the windows xp portion of the boot
sector.
