Hi everyone,

I'm looking at a friends xp pro computer.

It won't boot, comes up with error:
c:\windows\system32\config\system

I've found lots of help googling this, but my problem is this...

When I get to the part in Recovery Console where I choose the windows
installation ( there is only one so it is '1' ) and press Enter that's
it !!!!

I don't get the console to start working - it like locked up.

Any thoughts appreciated.

If you are attempting to perform a Repair Installation, you should not be in
Recovery Console. Perhaps this is you problem.

When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on
your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows
installations.

Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to
start the repair.

Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not
press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue
as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will
remain intact.

Thanks for you help....

I have actually tried this, but when it gets to the part where it is
searching for existing windows installations, it just hangs at that point !

Any other thoughts ?

What is Recover Console for then ? I have seen lots of help on this
where you backup and manually copy files over to fix the problem ?

cheers, Dave
