Cant boot into SafeMode

After updating XP pro on friday to service pack 2 ,we cant boot into
windows. Windows provides 'an apology' and a few options such as booting
into Safe mode but the sceen is black with safe mode in the corners but no
Start button to enable getting us to System Restore or any other recovery
tools. Can someone help guide out of this mess

No luck - cant get to the command prompt or repair option on the xp cd. The
cd cant be read. Tried inserting it prior to starting and also after.

You have gone into the BIOS and set the order of boot devices so that
the CD is the first boot device, then inserted the CD and rebooted the
computer?

Will that CD boot in another computer? Is it a Windows installation CD
and not a recovery CD?
