hey all,

i have an hp 514n 2.2ghz 1.0gb ram celeron. i switched out the hard drive
with a western digital 500gb drive.

i tried to boot from my win xp pro cd but when i turn on the pc it doesn't
do the "Press any key to boot from CD" it just says "Operating System not
found"

However, if i try to boot my win98 cd it will boot off the cd and let me
install.

Any ideas?

thanks,
rodchar

Double check your BIOS settings.
The CD must be set as the first boot device.

Check, the cd is on the top of the list. Could it be possibly something
else?

Bad CD maybe, check for scratches or finger prints.

Also:
Can you test the CD on another PC?

:
The BIOS is not seeing the boot files on the XP cd. Is this an
original XP disk? If the original hard drive still has an intact
OS, reinstall it and see if the XP cd can be read. If the cd can
be read the cd's XP boot files are probably corrupt. See
if you can borrow an XP cd of the same version and type,
OEM or retail, and make a copy. This is legal as long as
you have a licence and valid product key for the version copied.
