Can't boot after installing updates can I system restore

I just reinstalled xp sp1 on a dell demsion 4550, it was all ok. I installed
avg and some prog then SP2 and then did windows up dates. When I reboot it
starts loading windows and then comes up with a error. It does the same thing
starting in safe mode. I tried starting using last known good configuration
but same thing happens. Is it possible to run system restore with out booting
into windows or safe mode? Any other suggestions?

PS This is the error message:

Stop: c0000221 Bad image checksum
The image shdocvw.dll is possibly corrupt.
The header checksum does not match the computed checksum
