Can't "begin" WindowsXP

This may be a problem that has been aired in this group before but
I'm a new subscriber.

I run windowsXP Professional. I had a system crash (my first).
When the computer booted up afterwards Windows appeared to load
but on the screen which says, on the left, "To begin windows
click on your user name" there was nothing to click on. It had
previously had, on the right, my user under a small icon - but
the right hand side of the screen was balnk. The only things that
would respond to my mouse were the "turn off" or "restart"
icons.

My usual support guy is on holiday on the far side of the world but
viaemail suggested repairing the the sysyem from the windows CD.

I tried this. Despite getting three errors in the process (see below)
theprocess did seem to complete itself and windows did seem to load
- but I ended up with the same "begin" screen, still with no user
name to click on.

A frustrating element of this is that I have the impression that
Windows is there and running - it logged onto AVG and updated my
virus protection at one point late in the loading process (I got
the usual screen messages in a box) and then it reverted to the
faulty "begin" screen.


The support guy will be back from holiday sometime next week but,
in the interim, any ideas anyone, please?

PS The errors: there were three. the first was:

COM+SetUp error

Sub-component COM+ raised an exception error while
processing the OC_COMPLETE_INSTALLATION setup message.

d\nt\com1x\src\complussetup\ccompluscatalogsetup.cpp[line 472]

Error Code+0x80070002
The System cannot find the file specified.
currently there is no help for this error message. Please
see systemroot\cometup.log for more details

The other two were of a different form. The first:

Windows Update

An error occurred loading "C:\WINDOWS\System32\Inet.dll".*
The file may not have been installed or have corrupted.

*I think it was ".dll"

And the other similar and referring to a file with Outlook
Express (which Idon't use) in the title.

If you boot up in Safe Mode (when BIOS screen turns black hit F8 several
times and choose that option). Do you see the accounts? If so, can you
login?

When you are at the "Welcome" screen as you say with the "click on the user
name", if you hold down CTRL, ALT & DEL keys and keep them pressed for a
couple of seconds do you get a login dialog box. The dialog box will have a
space for your user name and one for you password with a OK & Cancel button.
If so can you put your user name and password in there and login.??

I have this same problem. When I hit ctrl, alt, del - I get the log in
screen, but when I try my old password, it doesn't work. When I leave the
password field blank, I am able to log in - but I only have "guest" account
privledges. Now I cannot do anything (like Windows Update, etc.), since I
don't have Administrator rights. Any help would be appreciated - I really
don't want to go thru a complete re-install.
