Are you trying to use the "Add or Remove Programs Utility?"

If so, try these steps:
1. Start Windows (if necessary) and close any applications that are
currently running.
2. Insert the program's disk in its drive.
3. Start the Add or Remove Programs utility:
* Click on the Start button and choose the Control Panel item from the
Start menu.
* Choose the Add or Remove Programs icon from the resulting Control
Panel window or submenu. The Add or Remove Programs window will open.
* Click on the Add New Programs button.
* Choose the CD or Floppy command button, which starts the Install
Program wizard
*Choose the Next command button. Windows will search for the
application's setup program and, if found, display its name in the test box.
If Windows is unable to loactate the setup program, check the application's
documentation for the proper file name and enter it in the text box.
* Choose the Finish button. The new applic. installation program will
begin to run.
* Follow othe on-screen instructions to complete the installation
process.
* At the end of the process, you may be asked to restart your computer.

Please let me know if this helped solve your problem!

Alison,
Are you trying to ADD a component or REMOVE one?

If your trying to ADD, its best to first follow the manufacturer's
recommendations via the "setup CD"; is this the CD that you do not have?

I also have a MS Windows XP SP2. You should be able to access the "add and
remove windows components" via the Control Panel's "Add & Remove Programs"
Utility. For the sake of saving space I will paste a MS link that will
explain in detail how to do this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307894

(Note step 6 in the link): "If you do not have the Windows XP CD-ROM, go on
to the next option; this may be your problem area, you will need to "locate
your Windows XP installation files......." etc.)

I suggest using the link above and carefully go thru the steps, whether you
are adding or removing a windows component. I hope this helps.
I am a novice computer person, but would like to know if this has been any
additional help in solving your problem!
Thanks, Kinju

Hi Alison,

Expanding a copy of msmsgs.inf from the Windows XP CD should help.

How to expand Windows XP files from the installation disk:

Examples:
