I have setup an XP pro machine with shared directories and printer, but when
I try to access any of it from a 98 pc it asks for a password. I haven't
setup any passwords, and anything I try doesn’t work.

Have I missed something?

If you don't need security. then turning on Simple File Sharing is probably
your best bet. You find this in My Computer, under the menu tools>folder
options. It's the last item.

With this ON, the Guest account is used to access shares If the guest
account has a password, this is the one you give. If no password, then it
shouldn't ask.

If not using Simple Sharing, then the XP machine must have a useraccount
which matches the one in force on the 98 computer. (There is always a 'user'
on a 98 computer, even if that fact is not apparent.)

Unfortunatly I can't turn on Simple File Sharing because it prevents my
Sophos anti-virus from updating.

The machine I am trying to connect with is logged in with my username and
password, and since the XP machine is mine, they do match.
