Login and password to use when accessing shared folder on xp pro

M

Mike

Using xp pro sp2 and win xp home sp2.

When trying to access a shared folder on the xp pro machine I am asked for a
login id and password. Have tried using the passowrd I have set up on the
xp pro machine but that does not work. The login box that shows up has a
guest login "fill in the blanks" area. How do I figure out what it is or
how do I assign one to it. I have no problem accessing the shared folder on
the home computer with xp pro, just can't access the xp pro shared folder
without the login/password on the xp pro computer.

Same problem different computers....

Bought a new notebook with Vista (premier I believe). The vista machine can
access the xp home but when I try to have the xp home access the shared
folder on Vista it again asks for a login/password.

Obviously it has to do with the xp pro or vista having some security setup.
So how do I setup a guest login id and password.

Thanks for your help

Mike,

Are you using Simple or Advanced File Sharing, on the XP Pro computer?

Now your language is slightly ambiguous - When you say "When trying to access a
shared folder on the xp pro machine", do you mean you are accessing FROM the
other computer (XP Home), or you're ON the XP Pro computer and trying to access
the XP Home computer? Remember that XP Home only uses Simple File Sharing, and
only provides network access by the Guest account.

Besides the matter of XP Pro having the option of using Advanced File Sharing
(and possibly non-Guest authentication) vs XP Home using only Simple File
Sharing (and only Guest authentication), there's the matter of XP Pro with token
based (cached) authentication.

And whatever account that you're using for network access - Guest (on XP Home,
and on XP Pro possibly) or non-Guest (on XP Pro possibly) - make sure that it's
activated to provide network access.

And check the Local Security Policy, on both computers.

You have a complex network, there, Mike. Try and understand each issue, and ask
questions.

Not sure which file sharing I am using. But it looks like I am using simple
on the xp home and advance on the xp pro and vista. Will look when I get
in front of that particular computer.

Sorry for not being clear. I am on the xp home computer and trying to
access a shared folder on the vista or xp pro computer.

What was happening is I have xp pro on my home computer. My #1 son has xp
pro and can access anything and everything. My #2 son has xp home and we
were getting the guest / login/password box each time he tried to access my
xp pro shared folder. So a way around it was it was to just have me put the
shared stuff in his xp home shared folder and then he could access it. Not
the best way but it worked. Now I know the real way to get it to work.
Will give it a try. To add another roadblock... My sons friend came over
with his new notebook with vista. He could access my sons computer but my
son could not access his. Again the login box came up. I knew then there
had to be a work around.

Your website gave me a lot of information. Will try it when I get home.

Thanks for the help.....

OK, Mike.

Do what you can, and ask more questions. Thanks for the update.
