Windows XP Pro Peer to Peer networking Problems

Hi there,

Just wondering can anyone help me with this strange problem.

I have 4 Windows XP Pro SP2 PCs setup in a peer to peer network.

All are named uniquely, have static IP addresses and are on the same Subnet
Mask and can ping each other but I cannot UNC into all of them to access the
shares that I have created on each PC.

1 PC does allow me to access the share by typing \\pc1\test for example but
when I try to do this from another PC it gives me an error message stating
“Logon Failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at
this computerâ€

Another PC when I try typing \\pc2\test says “The network path was not
found†although I have created a share and the syntax is correct.

Finally when I try typing \\pc3\test it requests a user name and password to
access the share. I don’t want to have a credentials check – how can I
remove this. Also even if I do supply credentials it still doesn’t allow me
to access the share, even when the credentials are correct.

There are not firewalls enabled and everything is physically connected ok.

I am not really familiar with Peer to peer networking in Windows XP,
previously I used P:p networking within Windows 2000 and never came up
against these types of problems.

Any help greatly appreciated, as it is quite frustrating not being able to
solve these problems.

Thanks in anticipation,

Tony

Tony,

You have several problems. Let's try to work on one at a time.

The easiest will be
“Logon Failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at
this computer”
This is a registry setting, generally caused by an antivirus product, on the
computer being accessed (or not being accessed).

And there are a number of possibilities for this problem
Finally when I try typing \\pc3\test it requests a user name and password to
access the share.
Is PC3 using Guest or non-Guest authentication? Has the account, that you're
trying to used, been properly activated for network access?

Let's get these issues solved, then work on the name resolution problem. For
that, look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

Hi Chuck,

I quickly printed and tried some of the links you provided in your answer
and I got a couple of the PC working that previously weren't working. I will
spend a bit more time reading through the links and trying the different
things you suggest.

I think with the info you provided I will get all my issues sorted.

Thanks a million for your response!

Regards,

Tony

Thanks for the feedback, Tony! Keep at it, one problem at a time. And ask
questions.
