Can't Access Share Residing on XP Box

I have an odd scenario that I can't seem to get right.

I have two windows XP boxes in a workgroup- one is acting as a File and
Print Server to offer several distinct shares. Simple File Sharing has
been disabled on both boxes and all drives are formatted with NTFS.

When the client tries to access the server, he can see the list of
shares (so a connection to the IPC$ share is made). But when trying to
open a share, they are rebuffed, and told that they can't open it
because of permissions, see the system administrator, blah blah blah.

The thing is - they are not presented with a window in which to present
alternate credentials. Accessing the share is possible, but only if
credentials are pre-defined in a mapped network drive. When I use the
run line and type \\xpbox\share, I am simply given an error message and
no access.

I have set up XP boxes and connected them in this fashion, with access
being granted by a dialog box, or even passthru (the same name and
password defined on both boxes to allow access). Now neither one
works.

Any ideas on tweaks to fix?

can you do this: net use \\xpbox\share /u:username? post back with the result.
