I'm running XP on my host computer (desktop--Dell 2400 Celeron 2.4G 256K
RAM) and
the little computer icons are there at the bottom and it says I'm connected
at 100 mbps.
Internet Sharing works. I simply do not have access to either computer in
either direction. It used to work. I figured out how to make additional
folders available over the network. I even got the printer to work over the
network. It all suddenly stopped working around the time my daughter
upgraded
MSN Messenger. I had to use System Restore to get things working again
because I kept getting MSN Messenger error messages even though I removed
(uninstalled)
the program. Now all of my Restore points have vanished.

It seems like I just need to change a setting somewhere but I've been
through everything I could find and it still doesn't work. I've uninstalled
Windows Network and reinstalled. I unchecked the box for Client for
Microsoft Windows, rebooted, and checked it again. I made sure the
Workgroup names were the same. I changed the name of the host computer.
I've tried to ping the other computer but
when I gave the command to discover the IP Address it came up blank. It
seems unlikely that it is a hardware problem since Internet Sharing works
and it's telling me how many bits have been sent and received.

One more thing: I tried to run the Network Setup Wizard on my other computer
(Win98SE, laptop) and it said something like I was not authorized to run
that program. Has anyone ever seen a Network Administrator in real life or
are they imaginary creatures such as elves, goblins, and eskimos?

Thanks.

Since I started having very similar problems I've paid attention to related
posts and there are quite a large number.

Yes, I noticed that and I just got to this newsgroup yesterday. I read
many of them but it seems I already tried everything suggested. And some of
the helpful links didn't go anywhere. Or they were basic setup
instructions, not problem solving.

I should also probably add in case I left anything out that the Network
Setup Wizard I couln't run was made by XP and I was trying to run it on my
laptop with 98SE. I would also like to say that I have networked many
computers successfully including an old AMD 586 and even an ancient 486
laptop running Win95. I even have expectations of networking my old 486 66
mhz Desktop runnning Win 3.11. I have no hopes of networking my 286. I
also have very little hope of ever getting XP networked again.

Ditto here with the 'networked many computers' statement.

A month ago I did a clean install of a xp home system that was networked
(wireless) to my XP pro system. Re-setup the network and it worked just
fine.
Three weeks ago we got a new xp home system. I set up the wireless home
network and it worked just fine. That computer had a warranty problem and
was replaced. I set up the network AGAIN and it worked just fine. Then, as
part of an overdue cleaning of my xp pro system, I did a clean install on
it. Network setup again worked just fine. Then three days ago - zapppppp!
Problem(s) I mentioned just started out of the blue!

Ulysses,

hey, you can even network DOS. You can even boot a computer from
a DOS diskette with a TCP/IP driver on it. Don't give up too
easily! (:-)

More seriously, perhaps you want to have a look at
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.
