can't access most links or pages

I'm trying not to blame the latest Windows updates, but it's very
strange that all these problems started after the latest updates were
installed. I have Windows 2000 and IE 6.0 SP1 . I uninstalled that
problem update a couple days ago (8899, or something like that) and
reinstalled it today, after the problems started, thinking it might
help. It didn't.

At this point, I can access Yahoo.com and a couple other sites by
clicking on my Favorites urls. However, I cannot access most other
sites. When I click on my Favorites, I'm given the "white page". If
I click on any links on this newsgroup, I'm given the white Cannot
find server page. I tried typing in the Tom Coyote url to download
HJT, but I can't access the site. I even tried to download Firefox,
thinking I could access those Help pages through it, and although I
can get to the Product page, the download link does nothing. I've
noticed a couple times in the lower left toolbar, there is a yellow
triangle with an explanation mark in it, but that does not
consistently occur.

I just ran CCleaner, AdAware, Spybot S&D, AVG,and Ewido; although, I
am unable to update them at this time and the last updates to them
were 15 days ago.

Any ideas on how I can obtain help when I can't access most web sites,
no matter which method I use?

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/26.html

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

6. See Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 may display a blank Web page
after you select Auto-Select encoding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870863

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Thank you, Frank. The regsvr32 urlmon.dll thing worked. :)

I read on one of the sites you provided that:
This behavior may occur when you load a page that contains frames and
the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) contains a long query string.

There is a site I go to that lately has been showing the frames and a
long string of code before completely loading. Maybe that's the
culprit? Whatever the reason, thank you for the quick response.
