can't access microsoft sites!

I can ping microsoft.com and have it resolve to 207.46.250.119 but i
cannot for the life of me browse to it by IE6 or another browser. I
thought it might be something tricky to do with my firewall so i am now
just using the windows one, to no effect. The weird thing is, if i boot
off another operating system from CD, i can go there!

I have scanned my computer with assorted spyware/virus checkers
(nothing), even tried online ones just in case. Yes, i have a license.
Windows update seems to work ok by itself (it's set to automatic) but i
wanted to have a look at ie7 and i heard a rumour windows update should
have installed it.

My browser internet options are all set to 'default', i have no proxy, I
cleared cache/cookies/etc. Nada! IE6 is obviously trying to get to the
right IP address (i can see it at the bottom)but i just get "page cannot
be displayed". Should i be able to ping that URL or is it set not to reply?

I'd rather not reinstall except as a last resort. In any case i might be
looking at getting vista when it launches whereupon i would be very
surprised if i get this again. I think it might be something subtle.

I've done quite a few searches but most of the answers seem to revolve
around trying to get around windows genuine advantage, which is
irrelevant because a) as i said i actually have a legit product b)
windows update seems to be working!

Help! This is driving me bananas!!!

Hi,

First thing I would check - in case it's a remnant of a virus - is your
HOSTS file.
It's located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
The file is named HOSTS - just like that.
Open it in Notepad.
A basic unchanged HOSTS file looks like this:

------------------------------------------------------------------------

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host
name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Hi Frustrated,
1=> Why you don't assign these website to be trusted in you zone sites under
Security Tab and Privacy tab.
Another try to rename your HOSTS file to Hosts.Frustrate and open a Run
Command and type this :
ipconfig /flushdns and click [OK]

Reboot and see if your Issue will resolve.

2=> Open IE Properties Window and Click On Advanced Tab scroll down under
Browsing:
[ ] Enable Third Party Browser extension (requi rs) uncheck this box

= Click on Programs Tab and go through your Add-Ons and Disable Non MS
and see if that will help nthen you can renable them and see which one the
culprit if any.
= On the same Tab click Reset Web Settings click OK and Reboot your
machine.

HTH.
Please let us know your result.
Regards,
nass

I am now in safe mode.

Arrggh. As before:
"The page cannot be displayed"

other sites like http://www.cnn.com/ work fine.

OK, ley's make sure everything is running properly:

Highlight, right-click and copy the text below between the dotted lines
- but not the dotted lines themselves. Open Notepad and paste it in.
Save the result as Update-Repair.bat in a suitable location, making
sure that the default .txt extension doesn't appear in the saved file
name. Double-click on the saved .bat file. Try the Updates again.

--------------------------------------------------------

net.exe stop wuauserv
regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
regsvr32 /s wups.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll
regsvr32 /s jscript.dll
regsvr32 /s atl.dll
regsvr32 /s softpub.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Well, there were no errors from the batch file but it seems my system is
unchanged. I saw the stopping windows update service at the start and
starting windows update service at the end but still no luck. I just
cannot access the "microsoft.com" domain from within windows. Or its ip
address. Maybe they banned me! :P

Functionality seems otherwise ok. Internet explorer can show videos from
the cnn.com site. kbid=924496 is the latest microsoft patch listed in
add/remove programs, installed on 11th October. I removed and re-added
the update for windows media player (917734) yesterday successfully.

I thought maybe i can ftp to microsoft? Is the output below normal?

ftp> bye

download and scan your system with - SpyBot Search & Destroy

here is the link:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

I downloaded ie7 from ubuntu and copied it over to my windows drive.
Installed fine, still can't access microsoft.com, ran diag, got results
below. It said i might have a firewall issue but i am only running the
windows one. It is set to show any conflicts anyway.

I find it interesting that i can access hotmail. I don't know how to
interpret "FTP (Passive): Error 12111 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com:
The FTP session was terminated
"

I can ftp to other sites but not microsoft. I run spybot regularly; just
in case, ran it again, no threats.

Looks like the complete help file. I could see it updating and otherwise
behaving itself. System info is also displaying correctly.
