can't access disk after stop error

I got a stop error 0x00000024, problem with ntfs.sys
computer goes into a rebooting cycle even in safe
mode. Tried all options for restarting after hitting F8.
Same result

Tried loading the recovery console from xp pro CD
got the same stop error.
Tried a parallel install got the same stop error.

Read almost everything in Auhma .org and the
Knowledge base.

Hooked the drive into 2nd xp machine as Sec Master
2nd machine got the stop error.

Hooked the drive up as slave, same stop error.

So any ideas on how I can access this drive with a view to
replacing the ntfs.sys file. Or is there something more
sinister going on.

Did you do the parallel install on the same hard drive? From your
description, I wonder if the drive itself has gone bad. It couldn't
hurt to get a diagnostic utility from the drive mftr. (obviously you'll
need to do this from a working computer). Usually you make a bootable
floppy. Then boot with the diagnostic and run a thorough test. If the
drive fails with errors, replace it.

Thanks Malke,

I got Seatools from the seagate website, hung the disk as primary master on
a 3rd pc,
Seatools informed me that the disk was OK but
there was a critical 'file structure error', couldn't fix, and advised
chkdsk from the OS.
Chkdsk from the OS was not an option as I couldn't boot into an OS.
Partition Magic said the disk was 'uncleanly dismounted' but couldn't fix.

After following a few links on a search for 'uncleanly dismounted'I got
NTFSDOS ran the chkdsk,
utility and problem solved.

Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
