Canoscan 5000f scanner problem

My scanner Canoscan 5000F worked for about a month. Now
it is not recognized by my dell computer. I have talked
with both Canon and Dell support but they have been of no
help. Canon sent me a new scanner but it still does not
work. The device manager indicates that the scanner is
installed however I get messages like: USB device not
recognized; One of the USB divices attached to this
computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize
it; cannot communicate with scanner; or unable to open
Twain source. Sometimes my computer shuts down.
Has anyone had this problem? Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks

I have exactly the same problem with my 5000F. I have Dell Dimension
4100 with Windows 2000. It worked perfectly and just stopped. I was
lazy and didn't call Canon or Dell yet. I have a feeling this is a
software problem, not hardware.
Between time when I had it working and time when I dicovered that it
doesn't work anymore I installed FireWire card and USB driver for my
camcorder. So I think there are three things to possibly blame here:
1. FireWire card.
2. Another USB driver.
3. One of multiple Windows security updates (those are responsible for
messing up quite a few other things.)

I guess I could've tried to uninstall stuff, but I don't need scanner
that much. I am just waiting until I buy new computer ...

If you discover anything, please let me know. I will naturally do the
same.
