Canon vs HP Multifunctions?

Hi,

I am looking at buying a basic multifunction printer, and have done some
research on the Canon MPC190 and the HP PSC1210. These units are both the
same price and seem to have similar specifications -
printing/scanning/copying.

One huge difference I have found is in the cost of replacement inks, where
the Canon replacement cartridges are about one third that of the HP. I
suspect this is due to 1) the Canon ink tanks look smaller, and 2) the Canon
unit has a permanent print head, whereas the HP has print heads built into
the replacement cartridges.

The Canon looks to be the best bet based on price of replacement inks (this
will not be my primary printer as I already have a laser), but I am
wondering about the issue of the permanent print heads. Does this mean that
the printer is a throwaway after changing the ink tanks a few times, or has
the technology improved to the point where this thing will last a few years?

I would be interested to hear from people's experience with these printers.

Regards,

Keithm

I have an HP 7130 (also takes memory cards) which meets my needs. Main
reason for choosing it was to get the HP print server module so I could
network the all-in-one.

To my knowledge, the HP is the only network solution which allows any
computer on the network (wired or wireless) to acces ALL the functions
(print, scan, fax, copy). It is expensive - about $700 including the
print server ($200)

The new Canon print heads are warranted for life and are very easy to
replace.

The HP PSC 2510 is about $400 and has similar capabilities in terms of
supporting network access to all functions. It has wired and wireless
networking built in, and can print, fax, scan, copy and access the camera
memory cards over the network. See:

I stand corrected, I didn't say what I meant! When I researched this
extensively over the last year, HP was the only one who had print
servers which would utilize all the functions over a variety of HP units.

In fact, when I called various wireless vendors (netgear, etc.), they
would not state that their print servers would support anything other
than the print function in a multifunction unit.
