Canon Smartbase MP360 drivers

Hi - I'm having difficulties getting Windows XP Home to recognise Canon
Smartbase MP360 connected via USB (having first installed version 1.0
drivers), to a HP Pavilion 760 - error message received - even tried
installing drivers from Canon UK site - ---- any suggestions ?
 
what's the exact error message?

have you disabled any important services?
 
the USB list in device manager indicated "Unknown Device" and a popup bubble
off taskbar indicated "Windows did not recognise the ... device, disconnect
and reconnect......" which of course did not work.

No I've not disabled any services, and the USB cable used works OK with my
older scanner. I wondered if it was the cable, since the printer is version
2 USB port compatible.

Anyway I took the printer back to Morgan Computers, they couldn't get it to
work on WinXP either - so it's being replaced.
