Canon PIXMA MP470 vs HP C4280

Each of these printers is available with 100% rebate with purchase of imac
through the apple store, so in effect, they are free. Which one to get?

According to reviews, Canon has better print quality, but HP is somewhat
faster and ink is somewhat cheaper. I find a lot of grumbling about the HP
in various venues, but no grumbling about the Canon.

But the Canon seems to have one downside that seems serious to me: The
waste ink pads that fill up, and are real trouble to change out at home.
This alone biases me toward the HP.

I'll be replacing an HP 940c, and an Epson Perfection 1250 scanner. (I
currently use my Sharp fax for copying). I do little scanning -- I would
do more with a faster scanner.

I have no complaint with my HP 940c except the price of ink cartridges.
I've had it for 6 years with no problems. I mostly print in greyscale,
papers and documents ranging up to 100 pages (I like to read manuals,
papers, and essays while not sitting at the computer). I don't know the
average. Most days, I print only 5 to 10 pages, I guess.

I do occasional color, and rare photo. I expect my greyscale usage would
stay about the same, but with more copying, scanning, and color
capabilities available I'll start to use them.

Any advice, particularly about the dangerous :) waste ink pads will be
appreciated!

Thanks,

John Velman

if you are going to that much printing to wear it out then you got your
moneys worth
i never had a problem
you do not want the mess to change it anyway

i would get an Epson v700 scanner and a Canon IP4500 printer got the
best of breed

Well in that case I would still get an Epson V700 scanner and a laser
printer. Look at the Okidata. I have heard good things about them.

I've used Canons exclusively for years, and never saw a waste ink pad fill
up, ever.
The MP470 is a fine printer, though not as good as the MP610. It qualifies
as top quality for everyday use, but not really a top quality photo printer.
Personally, I'd avoid HP printers like the plague, purely on account of the
really bad software and drivers.

The statement with HP drivers is not 100% accurate.  He forgot to see that HP drivers are ..... under Windows.  How about Apple?  How about Linux?  The HP CUPS/Foomatic driver works better than any print driver out there.
